Sampling Process & Roles

No experience is needed. Testing is typically done 1-2 meters off shore in thigh-high waders. Lightning is the only weather that cancels collection. As a team, we sample every week of the summer. Each specific pond is sampled every other week, except when a pond tests positive for cyanobacteria, then it must be sampled weekly until the pond tests negative.

The 2026 season begins May 27 and runs through September. Sampling day will be Wednesday.

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) is our partner that analyzes and processes the samples we collect. Here is their short video of how to conduct water sampling.

THE PROCESS
  • Gather at the first site by 7:00 a.m.

  • One or two experienced samplers can test one pond in 20 minutes

    • One person is the in-water sampler, typically wearing hip waders or on occasion full waders

    • One person is the on-shore data recorder who:

      • uses a Phone app (paper is a backup option)

      • wears short waterproof boots (recommended)

  • Typically, 2 to 3 ponds can be sampled in one morning

    • The largest amount of time on any morning is that spent driving between pond locations

  • Samplers will be assigned to a 3-person team that typically can accommodate most scheduling needs

    • We seek to have trained samplers available as emergency substitutes

  • Two training options will be scheduled the first and third weeks of May

    • Hands-on training can be done on any sampling day

    • Anyone can ride along to watch or learn

    • We will provide equipment if necessary

THE ROLES

The roles can be done in any combination depending on volunteer availability and commitment:

  • In-water sample

  • On-shore data recorder

  • Delivery driver (at 9:00 am collect samples and drive to APCC on 6A in Dennis)

  • Sample bottle prep:

    • Picking up fresh bottles from APCC Monday or Tuesday when they are ready

    • Labeling, sorting and preparing bottles for the coming week’s ponds being sampled.

    • Ensuring ice packs are freezing

  • Sample equipment: rinsing, organizing, gathering loaner equipment for those who need it and otherwise confirming samplers are prepared for the coming week’s schedule

  • Volunteer scheduling, coordination and communication
