Sampling Process & Roles
We start our mornings early, at 7:00 a.m.
Sampling is quick and efficient. With one or two experienced volunteers, a pond can usually be tested in about 20 minutes, and most teams visit two to three ponds each morning. The longest part of the morning is often just getting from one pond to the next.
Each team typically has two people:
-
An in-water sampler (wearing hip waders or, occasionally, full waders)
-
An on-shore data recorder who:
-
Uses a simple phone app (paper is always available as backup)
-
Wears short waterproof boots (recommended)
-
We do our best to create teams that offer flexibility for your schedule, and we always appreciate having a few trained volunteers available as backups when needed.
The 2026 season begins May 27 and runs until October 21. Sampling day will be Wednesday.
Training & Getting Started:
-
Two group training sessions are offered in the first and third weeks of May
-
You can also learn by doing—hands-on training is available on any sampling day
-
Not ready to jump in? You’re always welcome to ride along and observe
-
All equipment is provided if you need it
The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) is our partner that analyzes and processes the samples we collect. Here is their short video of how to conduct water sampling.
